Thanks to you our mission of high quality theatrical performance and youth theatre arts education will continue for many more generations. Please check back for the announcement of our 2021-2022 season! We are so excited to return to the theatre and be with the community we love!  Your support and belief in the mission of the Thalian Association Community Theatre is what makes all of our programs possible.   Tracing our roots back to 1788, Thalian Association Community Theatre was founded to enhance the rich artistic environment of the Cape Fear region. Today, our Youth Theatre presents five productions annually with auditions open to performers ages six through high school seniors. Our Youth Theatre Academy offers classes in various theatrical areas such as acting,  movement, audition techniques and technical threatre. Through our community outreach program Theater 4 Change, we send instructors to the Community Boys & Girls Club. The Brigade Boys & Girls Club, and the Girls Leadership Academy of Wilmington to teach theatre arts and support the enhancement program offered through New Hanover County Schools. Every season we provide ten free daytime performances to designated Title One elementary and middle schools. Three of those performances are sensory friendly for students in the Specially Designed Academics program. During the pandemic when live performances were not possible, shows were filmed for virtual presentation. As professional managers of the Hannah Block Historic USO/Community Arts Center, Thalian Association Community Theatre provides arts instructors with opportunities to teach classes at the Community Arts Center at reduced rates and visual artists have new opportunities to showcase their work in our new Community Gallery Space. As always, we will continue to provide space for rehearsals and meetings to qualifying non-profits at no charge to encourage and support the arts at all levels. We are proud to support our visual arts community with the beloved downtown Wilmington Memorial Day Weekend festival Orange Street ArtsFest – a tradition since 1995! Every year we present a Divine Divas fundraiser to raise funds for the She ROCKS ( Research Ovarian Cancer Knowledge Support) and out Youth Theatre programs. Of course none of these things will continue without your support. Revenue from ticket sales alone funds only a portion of our operating costs. Like most non-profit organizations, Thalian Association Community Theatre depends on the generosity of patrons like you to bridge that crucial gap. We invite you to get involved today and let the community know that you support local theatre in the Port City.

Theatre Jargon

Theatre Jargon   Here’s some terms you’ll hear used frequently at Thalian Association Community Theatre and their meanings. If you’re still not sure, please ask someone! •Apron: The part of the stage closest to the audience. The area of the theatre that is located between the curtain and the orchestra pit. •Arbor: The part of the counter-weight system that holds steel weights. The weight of the arbor must match the weight of the batten. See also Fly Rail and Batten. •Batten: the pipes above the main stage that are the part of the counter-weight system on which scenery and lights are hung. (RLT’s are “truss battens” meaning that they are made of two pipes connected by flat steel). See also Fly Rail and Arbor. •Blocking: Direction given to actors as to where they should stand or move to during the course of the play. Actors are given these bits of direction during blocking rehearsals and they should, as Haskell would say, “write it down, write it down, write it down”. •Booth: Where the stage manager and usually sound and light crews are during the production. •Call Board: The bulletin board where everyone signs in and notices are posted (also known as sign-in board) •Call Time: The time that all actors and crew are expected to be at the theater. •Callbacks: The second round of auditions. Depending on the production, the director uses callbacks to select principal roles (having already selected chorus/ensemble during the first round), or the director uses callbacks to review his/her short list of potential cast members. •Cast Party: The generic term for a party where all cast and crew involved with a production are invited to relax and have a good time after the show. •Costume Parade: When the actors dress up in their brand new costumes and stand in front of the Costume Designer and the Artistic Director to see how they look. •Cue to Cue run-through: A rehearsal of the play, usually done during Dry Tech, where you start at the beginning of the play, miss out long bits of dialogue where essentially nothing technical happens (eg no cues) and then skip forward to where something does happen, be it a lighting cue, sound cue, an actors entrance, a sequence where an actor has to get off to do a quick change and then back on again. It will involve all important happenings such as a song, a battle or a difficult sequence with props. •Curtain Call: When the actors come out at the end of the show to take their bows. •Curtain Warmers: The lights that are focused on the curtain so that the audience has something to look at before the show starts. •Curtain: Either the large drape that obscures the stage from an audience or a time when the show will start. •Down stage: The part of the stage that is closest to the audience. It is called “down” because some theatre stages are sloped (“raked”) towards the audience, so it literally … » Continue Reading

Be a Volunteer

Volunteer with Thalian Association Community Theatre Today Thalian Association Community Theatre is a non-profit, membership organization that is dedicated to enhancing the rich artistic environment of the Cape Fear region. Tracing its roots back to 1788, Thalian Association Community Theatre was founded to provide arts education and bring the excitement of the performing arts to Wilmington, North Carolina. Members elect the volunteer Board of Directors for the Thalian Association Community Theatre, and our Board elects our officers. Salaried positions include: Executive Director, Artistic Director, and Community Arts Center Director/Operations Coordinator, with all other manpower coming from scores of loyal volunteers. Membership in the community theatre organization is enjoyed by hundreds of Wilmingtonians, as well as patrons from throughout the region. This year we will produce three productions on the Main Stage of historic Thalian Hall, two productions at Kenan Auditorium, five Youth Theatre productions on the Second Street Stage in the Hannah Block Historic USO/Community Arts Center and host special fundraising events in the Cape Fear Region. None of these productions and events are possible without the support of our volunteers. Since 1994 we have managed the Hannah Block Historic USO/ Community Arts Center for the City of Wilmington. Special events are often held at the HBHUSO/CAC, with the largest being our annual Orange Street ArtsFest, held every Memorial Day weekend for over 25 years. Volunteers are needed to assist with the organization and technical production of special events, such as the OSAF and a new art exhibition ARTFall. We also need help feeding the Main Stage Thalian Hall casts and assistance with ushering and concessions for Youth Theatre productions at the Community Arts Center. Are you looking for a way to contribute to our community? We hope you will join our community theatre family and continue our tradition of performing arts and culture in the Cape Fear region. One person can make a big impact! All volunteer projects qualify for student community service hours and volunteers are invited to the dress rehearsals for Main Stage Thalian Hall productions.
