Twice The Holiday Fun for the Whole Family
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT: Susan Habas Thalian Association Community Theatre 910-251-1788 TWICE THE HOLIDAY FUN FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY WILMINGTON, NC – Thalian Association Community Theatre (TACT) is presenting two special holiday musical productions that families can enjoy together. First up is the youth theatre production and Wilmington premiere of Elf Jr. on the Second Street Stage at the HBHUSO/Community Arts Center. Based on the beloved 2003 hit movie, Elf Jr. tells the story of Buddy, a young orphan who mistakenly crawls into Santa’s bag of gifts and is transported to the North Pole. “We have something very special planned for the Elf Jr. audiences,” said Susan Habas, Thalian Association Community Theatre Executive Director. “The original Buddy, Will Ferrell, has filmed an introduction just for these performances. Mr. Ferrell has family here in Wilmington and as the father of three boys, he is very supportive of youth theatre arts and education.” There will also be paintings of the local ‘elves’ who will be appearing on stage on display in the lobby of the Historic USO building. Painted by 28 artists from the Wilmington Art Association (WAA) during the run of the play, this marks the third collaboration between TACT and the WAA to support performing and visual arts education for our young people. The paintings will be on sale to the public with a portion of the proceeds to benefit the Community Arts Center. See the modern holiday classic and embrace your inner elf for one weekend only December 1st – 4th. Performances are Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 7:30 PM; Saturday and Sunday matinees at 3:00 PM. To purchase tickets, visit Thalian.org or call 910-341-7860. Annie Warbucks, the sequel to the classic family favorite Annie will be presented on the Main Stage of Historic Thalian Hall. The action picks up right where Annie leaves off, when Child Welfare Commissioner Harriet Doyle arrives on the scene to inform Daddy Warbucks that he must marry within 60 days so that the newly adopted Annie can have a proper mother. In the end, Daddy Warbucks’ whirlwind search for a fitting bride uncovers not only a plot by Doyle and her daughter to strip him of his fortune, but also his true feelings for Grace Farrell. “The iconic characters Annie and Daddy Warbucks will be joined onstage by Annie’s loyal canine companion Sandy, said Habas. “Auditions were held to find the perfect diva dog to play Sandy and after fierce competition, Sadie Lawson an English Cream Golden Retriever was selected to play the coveted role.” Watch Annie and Sandy save the day December 8 – 18 at Historic Thalian Hall, 310 Chestnut Street in downtown Wilmington. Performances are Thursday through Saturday at 7:30 pm with a Sunday matinee at 3:00pm. Tickets are available at Thalian.org or 910-632-2285. But this year, the drama is just getting started. Here’s an overview: MONOLOGUE SLAM WINNERS ANNOUNCED Thalian Association has announced the winners of the Wilmington area’s first Monologue Slam held on Saturday, April 26 on the Second Street Stage at the Hannah Block Historic USO/Community Arts Center. The Monologue Slam was produced by the Thalian Association’s Children’s Theater (TACT) Leadership Program and directed by Sara Lucas. The event was inspired by her Senior Project. “Wilmington is blessed to have such an active theater community, but the productions are often primarily musical theater, so we thought a Monologue Slam would be a wonderful opportunity to spotlight another type of acting talent,” said Susan Habas, Executive Director of Thalian Association. “The talent and turnout for the event exceeded our expectations, so this will very likely be an annual event for Thalian Association.” The Monologue Slam featured 15 contestants ages 10 through adult who showcased their talent and artistic expression in three minute performances. The show’s format was similar to a music revue with monologues instead of music. The Monologue Slam judges included Tom Briggs, L.J. Woodard and Lee Lowrimore. The Leaders are senior members of the Children’s Theater who mentor their peers, foster community spirit, and encourage involvement in all aspects of theater. 50 YOUNG ACTORS CAST FOR CHILDREN’S THEATER SEASON FINALE More than 50 young actors attended auditions for Thalian Association Children’s Theater’s season finale, TACT Radio Hits Through The Ages, on Saturday, April 26 at the Community Arts Center, and 50 have been cast in this original music revue. Support Community Theater
Thalian Association is a non-profit, membership organization that’s dedicated to enhancing the rich artistic environment of the Cape Fear region. Tracing its roots back to 1788, Thalian Association- the Official Community Theater of North Carolina exists to enrich the lives of the residents of the Wilmington area by producing quality community theater, teaching youth life skills through theater education and providing an outlet for artists and technicians to develop and exercise their craft. When the North Carolina legislature named the Thalian Association the State Community Theater of North Carolina in 2007 Secretary of State Elaine Marshall emphasized that our organization’s prestigious title was not a distinction given lightly. “This is truly unique,” Marshall said. “But what this really does is honor a tradition of inspiring people, helping children, healing a community, all the things that the performing arts and an association to support that can mean.” In 2013 as we celebrate our 225th anniversary we are more committed than ever to that mission and our community. Revenue from ticket sales alone funds only a portion of our operating costs. Thalian Association depends on the generosity of donors like you to bridge that crucial gap. In 2007, the North Carolina legislature named the Thalian Association the State Community Theater of North Carolina. In an official ceremony held in Wilmington, Secretary of State Elaine Marshall emphasized that our organization’s prestigeous title was not a distinction given lightly. “This is truly unique,” Marshall said. “But what this really means is that it’s honoring a tradition of inspiring people, helping children, healing a community, all the things that the performing arts and an association to support that can mean.” The Thalian Association is a non-profit, membership-supported, community theater organization. Our members elect the volunteer Board of Directors which subsequently elects our officers. We have a salaried Managing Director and Artistic Director and a paid Operations Coordinator, with all other manpower coming from scores of loyal volunteers. We manage the Hannah Block Historic USO, home to Wilmington’s Community Arts Center, offering classes in a wide array of artistic diciplines. Thalian Community Theatre produces five major productions annually on the Main Stage at historic Thalian Hall. In fact, Thalian Hall was proudly named for our organization in 1858. When appropriate, we schedule weekday matinees for school groups and seniors. Our mission is to present quality live theater that illuminates the human experience for the citizens of Wilmington, New Hanover County and beyond. All of our productions are cast through auditions which are open to the general public. Through the years thousands of local actors, directors, choreographers, conductors, musicians, designers and technicians have enjoyed the opportunity to develop their craft working with the Thalian Association. One of the oldest amateur theater groups in the United States, the Thalian Association is currently compiling a complete history of the organization. We were voted Wilmington’s Best Theater Company in 2006 by the readers of Encore, the Cape Fear guide to arts and entertainment and have since reclaimed that title for many subsequent years.
