“Rookie” Production of Disney’s Alice In Wonderland Jr. Features Free Audition Workshop and Performances
WILMINGTON, NC – Thalian Association Community Theatre has very special plans for the 4th show of the 2024-2025 Youth Theatre season. Disney’s Alice in Wonderland Jr. will feature an all-rookie cast with all seats for the six performances free to the public on a first come basis. Our goal is to make the magic of live theatre accessible to all families to experience together! The production will be performed on the 2nd Street Stage at the Hannah Block Historic USO/Community Arts Center, Mar. 7 – 16, 2025. Shows are scheduled Fri. – Sat. at 7:30 pm with Sun. matinees at 3:00 pm.
Free tickets will first be available to area youth organizations in January then open to everyone on a first come basis on February 17th. Tickets can be reserved at 910-251-1788 or thalian.org. In addition to the six public shows, two daytime school performances will be offered with teaching resources to support classroom learning. The production of Alice in Wonderland Jr. with free public performances is supported by generous funding from the Arts Council of Wilmington & New Hanover County and the North Carolina Arts Council, a division of the Dept. of Natural and Cultural Resources.
The rookie program was created in 2023 to give youth who have never been cast in a Thalian Association production the chance to participate in a Youth Theatre show. All roles are available for ages 7 through high school seniors. A special how-to video and flyer explaining the audition process will be distributed to area youth organizations and posted on thalian.org. New this year is a free audition workshop led by Artistic Director Chandler Davis and Director Emily Graham that will be offered at the HBHUSO/Community Arts Center, Saturday November 16th, 1:00 – 4:00 pm. Parents are invited to attend a thirty minute information session following the workshop. The audition, also at the HBHUSO/Community Arts Center, will be January 18th, starting at 10:00 am. Young performers interested in the workshop or audition can register by calling 910-251-1788.
The benefits of theatre participation are well documented, improved reading comprehension, support of verbal & non-verbal communication skills, overall academic achievement, and higher rates of high school graduation. Studies also indicate theatre engagement develops soft skills not always taught in school, including leadership, analytical ability, teamwork, & adaptability. Activities such as attending live theatre strengthen family bonds, sense of connection, attachment, empathy, & communication.
The Creative Team for Disney’s Alice in Wonderland Jr. are well-known members of the local theatre community and veterans of the rookie program, including Director Emily Graham, Assistant Director Meghan McDonald, Music Director and Sound Designer Aimee Henderson, Choreographer Katie Auletti-Smith, Stage Manager Lilly Goddard, and Lightning Designer Logan Hayes.
